EED Software is a trademark of Blocon INTRODUCTION. Vertical ground heat exchangers (geothermal boreholes) are one of the main components of heat pump based HVAC systems. The cost of drilling can reach up to 40-50% of the total cost of such a system. It is therefore critical to accurately estimate the necessary depth and number of boreholes, in order to keep costs low.
The professional design approach consists of using complex computer simulations THE EED SOFTWARE. EED is the most widely used software for vertical heat exchanger design in the European Union. EED was created by a team of specialists from the University of Lund, Sweden. It was launched in Oct 2000 and new upgrades are released periodically. The most recent version is EED 3.16, which Geoterm uses in its projects.
EED is able to deal with a high variety of heat exchanger layouts, ranging from one borehole up to 1200. Even for small projects, is it worthwhile to use EED instead of the rule of thumb (which is usually 50 W/m) THE EED DESIGN PROCESS. Geoterm has used EED for vertical ground heat exchanger design since 2009. We have used the software in more than 30 projects, for a total of over 100 simulations using various data input sets.
As such, we acquired solid and versatile experience in EED design. Together with our broader expertise in heat exchanger technology, it allowed us to not only obtain the correct sizing parameters, but also to make recommendations about the entire design and execution process. Below you can find a scenario of the main inputs and outputs in EED A) Input Data 1. From the client: - heat load kW - run time hours / year - COP/SPF of the heat pump (heating) - cooling load kW - run time hours / year - COP/SPF of the heat pump (cooling) COP = performance coefficient SPF = seasonal performance factor Based on these inputs, one of the diagrams produced by EED is: 2.

Ground parameters - the average thermal conductivity λ W/mK as measured by the - the volumetric thermal capacity (a fixed constant) 3. Data to be adjusted by the designer: - the type of geothermal probe (single / double U, coaxial, etc.) - the depth of the borehole (20-200 meters) - the layout of the boreholes - the diameter of the boreholes - the type of sealing material B) The EED software produces the following output data: - the minimum necessary borehole depth - the optimal borehole layout - the temperature of the working fluid for the simulation period (5-100 years) C) Example As a demo of EED use, here are the output data it produced on a case study from our portfolio Click on an example of EED application.
