Vintage Tape (Audio), Cassette, Wire and Magnetic Disc Recorders and Players Open-reel tape recorders, cassette recorders, 8-track players etc. I have just bought a Uher 4400 Report Monitor (not Report Stereo) and I am now looking for a user manual in English. There is one in German on on the net but my technical German is not up to the job and there are no pictures.

There is a French user manual for the 4200 Report Stereo which I can cope with but the model is appreciably different from the 4400 Report Monitor. The machine doesn't appear to have an on-off switch which won't don't anything for battery life, though I suppose it is only illuminating a green LED. I am also puzzled by a couple of the switches on the front panel. Any enlightenment would be gratefully received.

There aren't many controls on a Uher, and they should all be fairly obvious. But note, if you are more used to cassette recorders: you can't go from PLAY to fast wind / rewind without going through STOP, and the PLAY key does not go down automatically with the RECORD key - even although both must be depressed together. You need to use two fingers! On my 4000 Report Monitor, the speed change knob has an 'off' position between each speed and the next. The 'BATT' switch displays the battery voltage on the recording level meter (there is a green band in the middle of the scale) and the 'LIGHT' switch illuminates the meter. One press turns the light on temporarily, two presses in quick succession turn it on permanently and a third press turns it off. On the 'MONITOR' switch, 'S' is source and 'T' is tape.

Export to pdf in asp.net using itextsharp. The 'ALC' switch is Automatic Level Control; '1' is for recording speech (fast response), '2' is for recording music (slow response) and '0' is manual. Pulling out the 'TONE' knob disconnects the internal speaker, to prevent feedback when using a microphone. 'I' and 'II' refer to the upper and lower tracks.

You can record onto one or both tracks at a time. The 4400 is a 4-track recorder, meaning each track occupies only 1/4 of the width of the tape.

So the tape can be turned over at the end, and the tracks you just finished recording will be safely out of the way of the head gaps; so you can record on the other side of the tape. (The 4200, which has the same electronics, is a 2-track stereo recorder, meaning each track occupies half the tape width; and if you turn over the tape, you will stomp all over the recording you just made, unless you were recording only onto one track.) Post a picture of the front panel if you're not certain about anything, and I or someone else will try to help. Thanks very much for that.

I have several reel-to-reel machines so I am cognisant of the difference between them and cassette recorders (though in the ones I had you had to press 'record' and 'play' simultaneously too) but all machines have their little quirks you really need a manual to explain. The 'T' and 'S' switch was puzzling me and also the little switch to the right of the microphone 2 socket.

Presumably it toggles between microphones and tape-head when recording. Thanks too for the info about the tone control switch turning off the loudspeaker.

Presumably the tone control only works in playback. Should it be kept in a central position for this purpose? The 4400 doesn't have the automatic level control and the other input controls you mention. Does the one you have have a 'monitor' DIN socket on the side? Is that for feeding a preamp and if so how is it wired.

Many thanks again. Your machine has a stereo / mono 1 (upper track) / mono 2 (lower track) switch in place of the auto switch, so it's strictly manual level control. Not that that's much of a loss really; with three heads, you can just wind the wick up until the off-tape signal begins to distort, then back it off a little. Some oxide formulations can handle a stronger signal than others. The little speaker on mine needs the tone control (which only affects playback and only downstream of the monitor output) turned up to about 2 o'clock.

The switch by the mic sockets will be to select separate mics in each one, or a single mono microphone fed to both channels. Pin 3 is signal, 2 is ground. Pin 5 is internally connected to pin 2 so a dynamic mic can be connected with a twin screened cable to pins 3 and 5, with the outer screen to pin 2. An electret mic should be connected to pins 3 (signal) and 2 (ground).

The 'monitor' socket on the side carries a line-level signal from the playback head or source, depending on the switch setting. Use this to supply an amplifier or PC sound card. Pin 3 is left, 5 is right and 2 is ground. Quote: Does anybody know why the switch might not be working?

Yep, I have the same problem with my 4200 Report Monitor but only in one of the 4 off positions. Behind the speed selector is a riveted bank of SPDT Spring Lever Microswitches which are individually activated at the '0' position between speed points.

In my case, it occurs at only one of the 'off' points and I think it's a weak leaf spring but, to get one of the leaf springs, you've got to buy a complete switch to extract it from. Fortunately, they are available from RS Components, Stock No: 741-0928 PS: There are several of these type of switches used throughout Uhers! Here's a pic (below). Quote: I managed to bend one of the spring contacts That's good news! I'm going to fit a new spring today to mine (from the assembly I got from RS). In the service manual it states that the switches on the speed/off control is not adjustable as it's rivetted.

Also, somewhere in my files, I should have a link for a free download of the English version of the user manual (as per my photo). I had a look last night, but due to my ageing brain, I couldn't find it. If I can't find it, I'll scan my one and send you a copy (may take a few days) Either way, I'll send you a PM with info.
