Thanks to one of our customers, we recently discovered an issue with the VMware ESXi host client that has the potential to affect many MacStadium users (and others running ESXi 6.0 U2 on Apple Mac computers). VMware recently released ESXi 6.0 U2 and with it came the general availability of a HTML5-based web client for managing single-node ESXi installations. This client is a boon for many MacStadium customers that take advantage of a single quad-core Mac mini or a Mac Pro for virtualizing OS X as they can now access the ESXi host from any device through a web browser. Previously a Windows installation was required to manage ESXi through a Windows desktop application. That meant customers with local Mac hardware had difficulty accessing their ESXi installation directly.

After a customer brought our attention to the problem, we were quick to verify it on several clean installations of ESXi 6.0 U2. We reached out to VMware and they were quick to respond and then verify the existence of this issue. Their team explained how to workaround the issue until a fix is implemented in a future release of VMware ESXi and the embedded Host Client. With the information from VMware, we’ve developed a step-by-step guide for resolving this issue on affected systems. The Issue With a single, deployed ESXi host (on Apple hardware) running VMware ESXi 6.0 U2 (without the vCenter appliance) using the newly-included VMware Host Client, it is not possible to complete the installation of OS X on a virtual machine.

Resolution The solution involves a simple seven step procedure that should take less than 5 minutes and is fairly simple to follow for even novice VMware users. Step 1 From the virtual machine page, power off the virtual machine that is hanging on boot. We’ll be editing it which isn’t possible while it’s running. Step 2 Right-click the virtual machine and select Edit Settings. Then select the VM Options tab at the top. Step 3 Expand the Advanced settings menu and select Edit Configuration at the Configuration Parameters heading. A new window will appear with a list of pre-existing parameters.

Step 4 Select the ‘Key’ column heading to sort all entries alphabetically. Scroll down and look for an smc.present key already exists. If not, skip to Step 7. Step 5 If the smc.present key is present and it’s value is false, change the value to true.
Step 6 If the smc.present key is not present, select Add parameter at the top of the window to create it. Fill in smc.present for the Key field and true for the Value field as seen in the above image then select Add. Step 7 Verify the newly-added smc.present key is present in the Configuration Parameters list; you may need to use the Refresh button at the top.
Select OK after confirmation and save the VM settings. You should now be able to start the OS X virtual machine and complete the installation process. Conclusion and Explanation Why is smc.present necessary?
The smc.present key tracks the existence of the Apple System Management Controller (SMC). The SMC has a wide range of low-level system functions, but in this case it is in place to enforce the Mac OS X End-user license agreement and ensure the system is running on genuine Apple hardware.
By adding the smc.present key to the VM with a true value, we are telling the virtual machine to run its checks against the hardware. The SMC within the virtual machine will verify that the ESXi host hardware is an Apple Mac computer (always true at MacStadium) and let the VM continue booting.
Because the VMware ESXi Host Client is a brand new addition to VMWare ESXi, it’s expected that bugs and/or missing features may still be found. We’re glad to have figured this out while working with the VMware team as many of our customers are now taking advantage of VMware ESXi 6.0 U2 and may be running into this issue. An update is planned by VMware that will include this key in future versions of the ESXi Host Client for anyone affected by the issue.
If you are a Hackintosh user with desktop virtualization software VMware workstation, then the “VMware unlocker” is a compulsory utility to run Mac OS X virtual machines on Windows computer. This unlocker utility replaces few VMware program files and patches them to install and run latest OS X 10.11, 10.10 and older versions as virtual machines. But the latest versions require this patch. I have already published few guides about installing, and OS X on VMware workstation by using this unlocker. I have demonstrated and tested the unlocker in VMware Workstation 7 series in, but once it was upgraded to version, or 8, it stopped working, its same for VMware workstation 12 too. Obviously, the upgrade process would have replaced earlier patched files, therefore I could not able to uses OS X guests. Using this VMware unlocker patch did the trick and now I can use Mac OX S virtual machines on Windows 10. Extra Note: Some user reported that even after upgrading to VMware workstation 12 from previous version, their Mac OS virtual machine keep working without using this unlocker. I do not know the exact reason for it, therefore, after the upgrade you can directly try your existing Mac guest machines, if they do not work then use this patch to unlock Mac OS X support on Unlocker 2.0.7 for VMware Workstation 12/11 I’m just a tester of this utility.
Full credits should who produced a great tool. The latest version 2.0.7 added support for new Windows 10 and few host Operating Systems. The unlocker version 2.0.7 works fine with the latest VMware workstation 12 and older versions such as 11. Here is working El Capitan 10.11 on Windows 10 with VMware workstation 12 by using latest unlocker 2.0.7.
Though following screenshots are taken from older Windows Operating System, but the methods and installation steps are identical for Windows 10 too. Below is the state of VMware workstation’s guest OS support without patching. As you see, there is no Mac OS X support under Guest operating system list. Download 2.0.7 Unlocker (Link below) Visit the ( free registration required). How to Install Unlocker on Windows 10 for VMware Workstation 12/11 Close the all virtual machines and VMware workstation program. Right click on ‘win-install.cmd’ and select Run as administrator. The script will stop the VMware services, copy few files and some other scripting stuff (you will see more about on-going process on the command prompt) and start the VMware services.
Once it has successfully patched the VMware workstation 12/11, you should be able to see the Mac OS X guest support as shown below. That’s it, you should be able to install and use Mac OS X guest VMs on. Here is the working Mac OS X 10.10.1 on Windows 8.1 with VMware workstation 11. Read below if you have older versions.
Unlocker for VMware workstation 10, 9, 8 and 7 The latest Unlocker 2.0.7 will work on most of the VMware workstation and Windows Operating Systems, but if you still have the older version, then you can follow below steps. I have not updated the screenshots for latest 1.1.1 unlocker or VMware workstation 10/9. The all below screenshots remain same with earlier versions (almost one year ago). But after seeing couple of positive feedback from users regarding this patch for VMware workstation 10 , I thought to update this post. How to Use Unlocker Its very simple. Close all VMware programs (if opened) Extract the downloaded file.
The latest Unlocker is having patch for Windows, Linux, Fusion 4.0 on Snow Leopard and Lion and VMware ESXi 5. Before run the patch, its recommended to take a backup of VMware program folder, because this patch will replace the original files. Even though the utility takes backup which can be replaced later if required, but its good to have a backup copy taken by you. Right click on install.cmd file and select run as administrator option as shown below. ( or you can start the command prompt as administrator in Windows 7 computer and execute install.cmd from command prompt) The successful patch will return the following screen (and disappears automatically) That’s it. You patched the VMware workstation 10, 9, 8 on Windows 7 host to run Mac OS X Lion guest. Restarting the host computer is not required here.
